Chapel Hill Ophthalmology Offers Eye Disease Management

Regular eye exams are important not only to see clearly but also to detect and treat eye disease that can rob you of your vision. Some types of eye disease occur with aging. However, others may be caused by health issues or work conditions. At Chapel Hill Ophthalmology, we provide superior care and individualized attention for your unique needs.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens at the front of the eye. The problem generally occurs with aging, but can also affect some young people. Symptoms include blurring of vision, dimming of images, poor night vision, "haloes" around light, sensitivity to light, fading of colors, double vision in one eye and the need for frequent eye prescription changes. Surgery is the standard treatment for cataracts.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition of increased pressure within the eye. This pressure can cause damage eye structure, which can eventually lead to blindness. Individuals may not have symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular eye exams are so important to preserving vision. Medications and laser surgery are used to slow the progress of the disease.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration causes damage to the macula in the central field of vision. The dry form causes the development of drusen bodies in the eye, which can be helped with nutritional supplements to the slow the progress of the disease. The wet form of macular degeneration is treated with laser surgery to treat the abnormal blood vessel development that occurs with the disease.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes causes damage to blood vessels throughout the body, and especially to the delicate blood vessels in the eyes. If you have diabetes, your physician will recommend twice yearly eye exams to detect changes to the eye structure that could signal a problem, such as a detached retina.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eyes can leave individuals with a gritty feeling in the eyes, tired eyes, a feeling of something in the eyes, excess watering, and blurred vision. It occurs when an amount of tears is reduced or when the quality of the tears doesn’t lubricate the eye surface. Medications can help improve moisturizing of the eyes. Punctal plugs are tiny devices placed in the eyes that prevent draining of eye moisture. Warm compresses and lid massage can also help.
