LASIK FAQs Answered by Our Chapel Hill Ophthalmologists

If your vision requires correction to see clearly and you would like to avoid having to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, chances are you have been considering a surgical approach. Our Chapel Hill ophthalmologists have years of experience providing services to improve patients’ eyesight. We often get questions from our patients about the LASIK procedure, so here are answers to help you consider if you would be a good candidate for this solution.

Woman getting lasik eye surgery

If you’re new to LASIK, a bit of an introduction will be useful before you contact your eye doctor in Chapel Hill for a consultation. Here are LASIK questions that patients frequently ask us about:

What Exactly Is LASIK?

LASIK is the name for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is a surgical procedure that involves using an excimer laser beam to change the shape of your cornea. The cornea is the eyeball’s clear covering. Adjusting its shape changes how the eye focuses light and this is how it can improve your vision.

How Do I Know if LASIK Surgery Is Right for Me?

Patients must be at least 18 years old. You’ll need to have had a stable eye prescription over the past year and your eyes must be healthy. People who are pregnant or nursing within the previous 3 months are not considered good candidates for LASIK. Your ophthalmologist in will determine if this is a suitable procedure for you.

Will My Vision Be Restored to 20/20 After I Get LASIK Surgery?

Following LASIK surgery, patients typically can do things such as watch movies or drive without the need to wear glasses anymore. The doctor cannot guarantee that you will wind up with perfect, 20/20 vision, but LASIK should give you sufficient improvement that you will prefer it to wearing contacts or glasses, going forward.

Is it Painful?

We apply anesthetic drops to your eyes to completely numb them before LASIK. Most patients do not feel pain during the procedure but do notice a mild sensation of pressure. Eye irritation after the procedure may last a few hours.

When Can I Go Back to My Usual Routine?

Our ophthalmologists are pleased to inform you that most patients can return to their normal routine the day after the procedure. However, you may be advised to avoid swimming or engaging in rough combat sports for a certain number of weeks. Consult with the doctor for details.
